What do others say about this tour and traveling with WTT?
How Active is this Tour?
On all WTT tours, travelers must be able to walk and stand for a sustained period of time. Thus, WTT tours are not suitable for anyone who is physically challenged or walking impaired and who cannot keep up with the moderate pace of the group.
This is a walking-intensive tour. We have selected a downtown hotel that is central to all included activities, which means that the group will walk almost everywhere. Expect to walk 4-6 miles each day as we primarily get around on foot in the historic district of the city. On most of the garden and home tours, even if you are not walking, you are likely standing for up to 2 hours at a time.
The activities on this tour are rated as follows:
- 40% Easy
- 60% Moderate (multiple walking tours)
- 10% Strenuous (walking-intensive tour)
Activity levels are subjective and based on the reader's interpretation. Almost everyone overestimates their abilities. Therefore, it is your responsibility to read the itinerary and understand what you are doing throughout the tour.
If you are in doubt as to your ability to meet the physical activity requirements, you should not sign up for this trip.

What clothing and items should I pack for this trip?
In general, this time of year is lovely in Charleston with highs in the upper 60s to 70s and lows in the 50s at night. We suggest you monitor weather apps before you depart for the most current information.
For This Trip You May Want —
- Warm jacket
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Smart-casual wear if you'd like to dress up a bit for dinners
- Inexpensive rain poncho or travel umbrella, just in case
- Clothing that layers easily
- Athletic wear if you'd like to borrow a hotel bicycle
Good Packing Habits —
- Bring what you need to get a good night's sleep, such as ear plugs, white noise generator, sleeping aids, etc. Unfamiliar noises of all types can disrupt your rest.
- Pack a limited amount of comfortable, casual clothing that layer and coordinate. Your fellow travelers will not mind or even notice – seeing you in the same clothing.
- Bring only two pairs of everyday shoes: one pair of well-broken-in walking shoes, and a second pair that could do double-duty as a walking shoe or a slightly dressy shoe.
- Pare down your beauty regimen to the bare minimum and always pack travel-sized toiletries.
- Pack medication in your carry-on and pack only as much as needed for the duration of your tour plus a few extra days as a precaution.
What are the luggage restrictions for this tour?
- We strongly recommend you bring only one suitcase plus small shoulder bag/day pack/purse.
- You are responsible for managing your own belongings.
How much money should I bring on this tour?
What are the tipping guidelines for this tour?
All tips to local guides during your tour will be paid on your behalf.
- You are responsible for tipping waitstaff, porters, or other individuals who provide a service to you at the hotel or other public locations.
- You may want to tip your WTT Tour Leader for an outstanding job. The amount is entirely a personal preference. If you'd like a guideline, consider $8-$10 per day.
